Travesty. Ridiculous. Ludicrous. Embarassing. Unbelievable.

Those are just a few words to describe the omission of Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose" from ANY nominations for the Country Music Association Awards.

We are asking for a boycott of the CMA broadcast, Nov. 9 on CBS. We are also asking for support of Loretta's nod for the Shortlist prize and a push for clearly-deserved Grammy nominations early next year.

Lynn's album is far and away the best-reviewed album of her career, and of the entire year, in any genre. To omit this amazing work with Jack White from the CMA nominations is a sad commentary on concerns with sales and ratings. It has garnered universal praise and is already topping "Best Of" lists.

The Tennessean recently reported that the ever-gracious ... Lynn did not comment on her exclusion, but manager Nancy Russell (who also manages nomination-rich Alan Jackson) was disconsolate.

''How incredibly disappointing it is to see an icon like Loretta Lynn put out not only the most critically acclaimed album of the year in any genre, but also the highest-charting country album of her 44-year-career, to be completely ignored,'' Russell said. ''But I guess most nominations now are based on singles activity and sales numbers, not on the quality of the music.''

"Van Lear Rose" was recently nominated for the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize, as selected by a panel of 20 Listmakers including top recording artists and music journalists. Nomination to the Long List is the first step towards the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize, presented by XM Satellite Radio and MTV2. The 10 Finalists for the coveted award will be announced in late September, and the Prize will be awarded during a multi-artist concert at the Wiltern in Los Angeles on November 10th. The complete Long List and the individual selections of each Listmaker can found on the official Shortlist website, ShorLlistofMusic.com.

The CMA's should have recognized "VLR" for many major awards, and Loretta herself should have been a front-runner for Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. Her duet with Jack White, "Portland, Oregon," should have a Vocal Event of the Year nod.

How sad that the CMA's are so concerned with sales (Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich), radio ("Whiskey Lullaby," anything Kenny Chesney) and pretty, but bland, music (Sara Evans).

A true shame -- plain and simple.

    • Loretta is the greatest living female in country music...argueably the greatest ever. Van Lear Rose is one of her best albums to date and it deserves to be rewarded. I am young and I buy no material from most of those artists who are nominated. The award show will be a dsigrace to country music and I..and many others...will not be watching. I am embarrased for the CMA.

    • The CMA has disgraced itself by not nominating Loretta for Van Lear Rose. Surely a top artist will speak out for Loretta on the awards show, or surely their will be a tribute for one of the greatest albums ever!
