We, the undersigned, call for a reversal of the decision to postpone Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince until July, 2009. We see the decision on behalf of Warner Bros. to show contempt for Harry Potter fans and the movie-going public in general.

We believe the reasons behind the decision are fatally flawed and do nothing but prove Warner Bros. is unequivocally out of touch with the Harry Potter fanbase. To put off the release of a major film strictly for the sake of profit is the antithesis of what the Harry Potter story embodies. Anyone who will see this film in July, 2009 would be seeing it in November, 2008. There will be no difference in numbers.

In terms of good business, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone has been the most successful Harry Potter movie to date. It was released in November, 2001.

We petition the reinstatement of the November release date, and that Warner Bros. cease their greedy operations of our beloved franchise. In case of a failure to reinstate the original release date, this petition calls for a boycott of the film in the cinema until such a time that it has lost out to competing blockbuster films.

    • While I understand that there are monetary reasons, unless WB is going through a financial crisis they have not admitted to, I don't see why that should be an excuse to hold an entire movie back. Moreover, it is letting down fans who have made plans to see the movie - and in some cases, wasting their own money. Finally, as HBP is going to be PG-13, the "family movie" excuse does not work. Besides, if you do your research you will find that the fans who were indeed young when Harry Potter was first popular are now at least in their final years of high school.

    • People are more likely to lose interest til summer. A pushed back release date is never ever seen as a good sign.

    • This is ridiculous. If they are doing this so that they can try to have the number one movie of the year in 2008 (Dark Knight) and 2009 (HP), then I feel sorry for them and how greedy and deluded they have become. At the end of the day, making movies should be about telling a story and entertaining the audience.

    • I have always defened WB's decisions, such as splitting Deathly Hallows, as not using profit as a motivator. However, WB's unabashed decision to move Half-Blood Prince for the sake of money shocks me.
