We, the undersigned, support preserving the three historic buildings located at 118, 120, and 122 West Main Street in Durham, North Carolina and, therefore, oppose Greenfire Development's application to the Durham Historic Preservation Commission for a certificate of appropriateness (COA) for demolition of these three historic structures.

The demolition of these buildings would be a great loss to the Durham community, further erasing the architectural footprint of our city's rich historical past. Approving a COA for demolition would be an affront to the fact that these buildings are contributing structures within a recognized historic district. In light of this, we urge the Durham Historic Preservation Commission to deny Greenfire Development's application for a COA for demolition of the historic buildings at 118, 120, and 122 West Main Street.

    • Greenfire, stick to one of your stated virtues (historic preservation) and find a creative way to integrate these buildings into your master plan.

    • These buildings, though somewhat plain, are a connection to our history. Every demolition is a painful gamble.

    • Greenfire needs to understand that the destruction of these buildings will also destroy their own reputation among those VOTERS who care about historic preservation.

    • Without knowledge of the current state of these structures, I am not entirely in favor of saving these structures with the exception of their facades. I believe they can be integrated into a design allowing for a much taller structure to rise from these facades. If done well & with historical significance in mind, increased square footage via taller structures within the downtown Durham city limits can be an asset to our great city. Greenfire could accomplish this and still work with community feedback that should be limited since the community may not be the best source of understanding for such a long term improvement. I am only signing this petition for two reasons that includes asking Greenfire to solicit community feedback and, second, to save the facades and incorporate these into a much larger and taller design if this is at all feasible. I do not mind how tall the buildings will be. I am on the fence until more information and cooperation is provided as long as it doesn't become an endless battle.

    • I think the downtown area of Asheville is a wonderful representation of what Durham's downtown can be. We need to preserve all the older buildings we have.

    • The last thing Durham needs is another free-standing tower. Instead, we need to preserve the unique character of Main Street!
