Whereas the 47 layoffs announced Nov. 16 at York Central Hospital will affect various positions including Personal Care Assistants (PCAs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) Dialysis Assistants, and Food Services Attendants, setting in motion a chain of bumping and job loss, causing further chaos and uncertainty in our hospital;
And whereas this is the second round of layoff notices issued within the last nine months;
And whereas front-line and support staff have been hit with 100 per cent of all layoffs, while the hospital has been able to hire more managers;
And whereas south-central York Region, the area serviced by YCH, is among the fastest-growing regions in Canada, both in population and in wealth, with the hospital recently receiving $46.5 million for expansion; and needs more, not fewer front-line and support workers in health care.
We the undersigned, community members and staff petition the Legislative Assembly and YCH Board as follows:
That YCH stop laying off workers, stop creating fear and uncertainty in its work force, and provide the best possible health care services for the community;

- Stop making front-line workers accountable for the waste of Hospital funding. The hospital administration needs to realize they are not exempt from layoffs because their status gives them a free pass not to be considered as a participant in bringing down the deficit.

- Friday, Nov. 18 a 89 yr old friend was taken to Ych by ambulance. I was called to assist her. The ambulance corridor was filled with 6 stretchers. The paramedics were taking care of her and we agreed that I would go home and wait for my friend to call me when she could go home or be admitted. She called me a 4:30 am to tell me that she was finally put into a side room and would be x-rayed when possible. She called me later to say that I could pick her up at 12 noon. I am a volunteed and a financial supporter of the hospital so I am pleased that the expansion is finally going to happen but who will staff the expansion when current professisonals are continually being laid off? I am sickened and appalled by the layoffs.

- Our Health Care system should not be cutting workers job,it needs all the qualified personnel as you have a generation of baby boomers, who will be retiring soon and will also be in need of more services from the hospitals and health care facilities.

- Start being responsible about health care; hire more front-line workers to shorten waiting times, don't lay them off.

- Hospitals are short enough staff as it is! The staff shortages are criminal. The Premier and his Cabinet should be the ones to be laid off

- This is a shame and is the continued effort of our goverment officals to destroy public healthcare. There are already enough shortages with support staff and once again the frontline is cut putting patients in danger and families in crisis.
