We, the undersigned, as responsible dog owners, men and women, citizens of Colorado, in the United States of America, or members of the wider dog-owning public outside the City of Denver, do hereby protest the irresponsible, inflammatory remarks by Kory Nelson, City Attorney,as hate speech, in which he deliberately incites violence towards dogs and calls the shooting of innocent dogs as justified, thereby placing innocent dogs and innocent bystander citizens in danger.
Kory Nelsons, and indeed The City Of Denvers, continued and deliberate public denouncement and defamation of recognized bull dog breeds, as well as the principles and practices of responsible dog ownership of any breed, are conveyed in whole or in part as policy of the City Of Denver, its agents, employees, public officials, its operatives, and spokespersons.
The City Of Denver has an obligation to protect both the public safety as well as the inherent and inalienable rights of all of its citizens, including those of responsible dog owners, consistent with the Constitution of the United States of America. The City Of Denver has deliberately alienated, excluded, and segregated the dog-owning public based upon dog breed.
Kory Nelson and The City of Denver have projected a distorted view of the vast majority of the bull dog breeds, pit bull type dogs, and a distorted view of the vast majority of responsible owners. This distortion threatens the freedom of responsible dog owners in The City of Denver, The State of Colorado, and The United States of America, as well as the threatens the economic stability of responsible citizens and members of the business community involved the the sport of pure-bred dogs, and indeed the viability of all dog-related businesses and veterinary medical practices.
The right to own and enjoy a dog is protected within the Constitution Of The United States. The City of Denver is inhibiting the inalienable right of responsible dog owners to freely own a dog of their choice by enacting a breed ban, criminalizing responsible dog ownership and creating an atmosphere of harrasment, intimidation and hostility for responsible dog owners.
Hundreds upon thousands of responsible American dog owners from all racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds freely choose to keep and own the very breeds which The City Of Denver has banned, keeping these dogs as loving family pets, selected for their devotion to family.
The City of Denver has condemned hundreds of innocent dogs to death through the breed ban, identifying them as dangerous soley on the basis of breed for the purpose of euthanisia, an act which itself defies humane treatment, as well as the overwhelming and clear evidence and testimony by nationally recognized animal welfare organizations that ownership, and not breed, is the primary predictor in canine behavior.
The subject of this grievance and petition is the blatent lack of regard for both the sanctity of human life, and the life of innocent dogs, through the remarks of Kory Nelson, Denver City Attorney, and the blatent disregard for the rights of responsible dog-owning citizens of The City Of Denver. Mr. Nelson states, Anyone shooting a pit bull running loose is justified.
As an attorney sworn to uphold the law, Mr. Nelson also shows blatent disregard for his office and the safety of the citizenry of Denver. These remarks, which incite violence toward dogs and perhaps even dog owners, are inexcuseable.
Furthermore, Mr. Nelsons clear and continual disregard for the breed and human life result in a biased representation in the media of responsible dog owners and the resulting inaccurate public perception of responsible dog owners.
Both Mr. Nelson and The City Of Denver have committed an intentional act of breed discrimination, thereby creating an atmosphere of hostility for responsible dog owners of bull dog and pit bull type dogs, and other owners of dogs frequently mistaken for these breeds.
In light of these events, we, the undersigned, call for immediate action to restore the freedoms and inalienable rights which have been denied to responsible dog owners through the endorsement of or complicity with offensive hate speech against dogs by The City of Denver, City Attorney Kory Nelson, and others representing the views and policies of The City Of Denver.
We, the responsible dog owners and respresentatives of dog-related organizations and businesses, do specifically protest the continuing derrogatory, degrading, and false portrayal of pit bull type dogs, the bull dog breeds, and the owners of such dogs.
We demand immediate relief and rectification of this great wrong to responsible dog owners, comprising 44.9\% of American households, being committed by the Kory Nelson and The City Of Denver and request the following:
1. The immediate resignation of City Attorney, Kory Nelson, for his hate speech and violence-inciting remarks that justify shooting dogs;
2. An official and public retractment and apology by The City Of Denver to all responsible dog owners, published in the national print, broadcast and web-based media;
3. An immediate repeal of the current breed ban and an immediate stay on the euthanization of pit bull type dogs;
4. Convening a task force comprised of nationally recognized animal welfare experts in the field of dangerous dog law to assist The City Of Denver to create and enact reasonable, effective, enforceable dog law;
5. A concerted and conscientious effort on the part of The City Of Denver to identify at-risk groups and communicate and promote responsible dog ownership throughout the city for the benefit and safety of all Denver citizens.
Respectfully submitted by

- Ignorance breeds contempt. It is obvious that Denver Officials are loathed all over America & across the pond. Denver? Is that in the US? Doesn't sound like the Land of the Free.

- This man has shown all the signs of a racially unbalanced maniac when it comes to dogs. In the 80's it was Chows that were his dog of choice. Please get him some professional help. There are many good Psychiatrists in Denver.

- I think if we looked up numbers more of our elected officials have caused death and disfigurment than dogs. Maybe we should ban them?

- I have had two dogs of breeds normally just called "pit bulls" as service dogs and they are loving and loyal animals. It is not the dogs who are the problems, but bad owners. AND just because I own pit bull type dogs does NOT make me an undesirable citizen Mr. Kory Nelson! Your community would benefit from having my dogs and me live in your town, except that we would not want to live there.

- Pit Bulls in particular have been in a firestorm of bad publicity, and throughout the country Pit Bulls often bear the brunt of breed specific legislation. One severe or fatal attack can result in either restrictions or outright banning of this breed (and other breeds) in a community. While any severe or fatal attack on a person is tragic, there is often a tragic loss of perspective as to degree of dangerousness associated with this breed in reaction to a fatality. Virtually any breed of dog can be implicated in a human fatality.

- There seems to be an ever growing expectation of a "behaviorally homogenized" dog - "Benji" in the shape of a Rottweiler. Breeds of dogs with greater protection instincts or an elevated prey-drive are often unfairly viewed as "aggressive or dangerous". No breed of dog is inherently vicious, as all breeds of dogs were created and are maintained exclusively to serve and co-exist with humans. The problem exists not within the breed of dog, but rather within the owners that fail to control, supervise, maintain and properly train the breed of dog they choose to keep.

- I just read a book review on Amazon.com where Kory Nelson decided to spread horrible propaganda about pit bull terriers. In a book review! This man is obviously obsessive and has a heartless political agenda. I Googled his name and found this petition. I think it is worth signing. Thank you for that Kory.

- This makes me sick to my stomach. I have a beautiful puredbred American Pitbull Terrier that is happy as a clown and the BEST dog I have ever owned (I've owned various breeds) The thought that someone would just show up and take her away would drive me to protect her. I'm curious if there has been more violence with people trying to protect their innocent dogs...Punish the Deed NOT the Breed!

Why don't you do something more useful with our money like getting homeless jobs or supporting education. Heil Governor Owens-for sending the gestopo on our nation's beloved pets.

- To all who does not understand the breed needs to become educated and we need to punish the ingorance of the owners not the beauty of the breed. It is not the breed who is the killer it is the untrained people who dont know better. Any breed can be a killer so we need to punish the owner not the breed. Pit bulls are loyal and all they want to do is please their owners.
