We, the undersigned, would like the right to urban chicken keeping in Port Saint Lucie/Saint Lucie County, Florida. We would like to change the city ordinance to allow a limited number of hens to be kept on private property. We believe our current code protects us from any public nuisance or health hazards (Secs. 40.18, 92.09, 92.14, 94.).

We believe that chicken keeping is a healthy, economic, and sustainable way to feed and enrich our families and our communities. Besides making great pets, hens provide us with the freshest eggs which assists towards local sustainable living. They serve as a safer alternative to toxic pesticides by eating bugs and insects, including fleas and disease spreading ticks. Chickens also eat weeds. This means less use of chemical weed killers entering into our soil and water supply. Chicken manure serves as an excellent fertilizer for lawns and gardens. Overall, less chemicals means healthy land, and healthy land means healthy families. We believe that this type of thinking will also exhibit the positive living that is a part of our wonderful city to potential residents. Backyard chickens provide many benefits, which is now a "huge movement going throughout the country" and we are asking that Port Saint Lucie/Saint Lucie County allow residents the right to keep hens as backyard pets.
