Petition – An exclamation to the Israeli Electricity Company (IEC) to Go On with the Protection of the Electric Line Poles Project

More than 150 birds annually, some of rare species, are to be electrocuted to death in Israel. The IEC can prevent these unnecessary incidents of death, but preferred to renounce from its responsibility.

On 1998-2005, a mutual project of the IEC, The Society of the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) and the Israel Nature and National Parks Protection Authority (INNPPA) took place. On that project, around 2000 electric pools were protected, but this project never accomplished. Since 2005, around 400 raptors, including species like Greater Spotted Eagles, Imperial Eagles (both species are endangered and ranked on the Red Book as Globally Vulnerable), Bonelli's Eagles (Locally ranked endangers), Griffon Vultures (Locally ranked critical), Black Kites, Common Buzzards, Falcon species and Barn Owls.

Despite of repeated warnings of the SPNI Birding Centers persons, led by Dr. Yossi Leshem and Dan Alon, the people of the INNPPA, and worried birdwatchers for all over the country, the Protection of the Electric Line Poles Project was not continued. The SPNI people claim, that 600 poles need to be protected urgently! Each year, about 150 new poles need to be protected.

Considering Israel richness in number and verity of bird species in relation to its size, and the high density of this environment, conservation and reinforcement, actions like this for raptors populations which are in extinct danger should be highly prioritize.

The protection actions, on these high voltage electric pools, where these incidents of raptors electrocuted to death can not be delayed!

We, the undersigned, demanding from the IEC, to take action immediately, and without any delay, and to protect these electric pools which are traps of death for hundreds of birds each year.


Avoiding this action, is an environmental sever crime, and the damages of not protecting these pools is an expressed disrespect of nature values, and ignorance of the ECI commitment as a national company to protect the nature of Israel

Therefore, we are calling excitingly to the IEC, to continue the protection project as soon as possible.
