General Babaginda: The One Million Signatures Internet Petition Drive


2007 is a long time from now, but with the recent return to Nigeria of Professor Omoruyi, a close political affiliate of General Babaginda; it has become obvious that Babaginda political machinery is set in motion. Thus, there is a need for Nigerians to be proactive. Nigerians need to be afraid. There is a real horror of having a dictatorship imposed on our collective will again. We therefore, need to caste out dishonorable men from our future political experience. We need to remove the virus before it spreads. We need to rid us of political undesirables.

PETITION BACKGROUND


General Ibrahim Babaginda ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993. In his 1985 speech to the Nation, Babaginda promised Nigerians “My colleagues and I are determined to change the course of history. This government is determined to unite this country. We shall not allow anything to obstruct us. We recognise that a government, be it civilian or military, needs the consent of the people to govern if it is to reach its objective. We do not intend to rule by force. At the same time, we should not be expected to submit to unreasonable demands. Fundamental rights and civil liberties will be respected, but their exercise must not degenerate into irrational expression nor border on subversion.” We say , never again! Babaginda ruled by arbitrary force. Babaginda did not rule with the consent of the people.


After Babaginda annulled the June 12 elections, this is what he told Nigerians, “Fellow Nigerians, it is true that by the cancelled presidential election, we all found the nation at a peculiar bar of history which was neither bargained for, nor was it envisaged in the reform programmes of transition as enunciated in 1986/87. In the circumstance, the administration had no option than to respond appropriately to the unfortunate experience of terminating the presidential election. Our actions are in full conformity with the original objectives of the transition to civil programme. It was also in conformity with the avowed commitment of the administration to advance the cause of national unity, stability, and democracy. In annulling the presidential election, this administration was keenly aware of its promise in November 1992 that it would disengage and institute a return to democracy on August 27, 1993. We are determined to keep the promise.” We say never again! Never again will our political decency, our political will , our political destiny be tainted by the whims of a reckless dictator.


QUOTES: WHAT NIGERIANS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT BABAGINDA


“Until we start asking our selves questions about how we came about our wealth, this nation is headed for the gutters. Up till this hour, it is the case that no cause of action exists against Babaginda and thousands others who have so much money but whose sources are still unknown. That is preposterous to say the least. Our lawmakers, like their counterparts elsewhere, has the power to make laws that would require that every Nigerian gives a convincing account about his wealth or he is sent to jail. And if we do this as a national process, I bet that there would be a drastic reduction in the incidents of corrupt over night wealth.”



“For those who may not know who Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd) is, he was a soldier in the Nigerian Army and was involved in a series of military coups culminating in the one in which he treacherously overthrew his erstwhile boss, Gen. Mohamadu Buhari, in a palace coup in August 1985. And from 1985 till 1993 when he was forced to quit power, he remained the head of a military junta that dictatorially ruled the Federation of Nigeria. He is alive and resides in Minna, a town not too far away from Abuja. I should also add that he is reputed to be very rich and politically influential.”




“Babaginda hardly goes out for even social functions these days , because the masses stone (curse) him where ever he appears despite his wealth and they even call him "barawo. barawo".It might interest you to know that he and Aliyu Gusau (Chief Security Officer to Obasanjo) were stoned by the masses in Zaria City! They had to camouflage to escape!”



“During the governance of Ibrahim Babaginda, it was reported that the country was elevated from “observer nation” to full membership of the Organisation of Islamic Nations (OIC). At that time Christians were unhappy and the reaction was no more than a few rumblings that were soon replaced by other issues. The next time another president attempts to affiliate the nation to a religious Organisation, the consequences would not be sedate. It is not the office of the president to convert faiths or beliefs either by commission or omission. Doing so is a travesty on the office, which is to protect and defend the freedom enshrined in the constitution”


“In Nigeria, especially during the Babaginda Administration, accountability was non-existent. The Administration refused to publish senior officials' declarations of assets and press critics were persecuted by the government, intensifying high-level corruption. If politicians had any intention of limiting corruption, any revelation of wrongdoing would have been accompanied by swift retaliatory measures, and failure to take such action would have provoked an immediate public outcry. Administrative misuse of funds would have been rare; the possibilities of being caught, high; the penalties, severe; and the potential gains, most problematic.”





“Gen Babangida can also be credited for initiating the tactics of punishing an entire region for the slightest threat of an alleged military coup. The Middle Belt region was severely punished for the failure of Maj. Gen. Vatsa’s coup in the eighties. So many officers from the region were dismissed or terminated. Gen. Babaginda could also be credited for using strong-arm military tactics to interfere in the politics of the Sokoto caliphate and the efforts to eliminate Islamic militants during the heydays of Maitatisne uprisings in the North. Hundreds, if not thousands of people, were wiped out.”



“Apart from Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), no other Nigerian leader has lasted so long in office continuously as IBB. It follows therefore that no other person in the country has enjoyed the singular opportunity to make as much impact on the country as Babaginda had. He is generally known by the sobriquet of Maradona, adopted after the Argentina soccer juggler, Diego. The difference however is that while the Argentine original was a maestro on the soccer pitch, the Nigerian namesake was a maestro in the manipulation of men and policies – a military tactician in a civil arena. No doubt, he is a great man, indeed and fortuitously. But he also has a huge insoluble problem of credibility and trust, even among his ‘friends’.”


“Bashorun Abiola returned in 1992 to politics on the platform defunct Social Democratic party (SDP). Bashorun Abiola and Alhaji Bashir Tofa Emerged presidencial candidates of both the Social Democratic party and National Republic Congress (NRC) respectively through the electoral processing of option A4. The election was conducted On June 12, 1993 but the result of the election was not conclusive before the then Military Dictator Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babaginda (IBB) anulled the election which now let "over 100 millions Citizen of a nation that had voted for the man of their choice, regardless of religious and ethnic differences, stood on the ground for the anullment of an election which was conducted freely and fairly", gone on a mass demostration in their protest to release the left over results, but in this act, they were harrassed, britalized and killed by the military Junta. In effort to actualised the mandate of the people, Bashorun Abiola, fought legal and dipomatic battle before he was clamped behind bars by the regime of the late General Sanni Abacha in 1994, when declare himself President based on the June 12, 1993 Election result for treasonable felony.”
