To:  The Prime Minister of Jamaica ,The Minister of National Security,The Jamaican Media,The Commissioner of Police

We are Jamaican Citizens living in Jamaica and the Diaspora and supported the change of Government in October 2007

And

Where as:

We have seen murders move from 400 per annum in the 1980s to an average of 1500 per annum in 2000K with no sign of abatement.

Where as:

The World Bank and others have demonstrated that crime and violence costs Jamaica approximately Ja$3.7 Billion per annum in loss revenue, many man hours wasted in Emergency Services as well as loss of production [cite: Impact of Crime on Business and the Investment Climate in Jamaica January 22, 2004

Where as:

It has been demonstrated by respected Non Governmental Organizations such as Amnesty International, Jamaicans For Justice, Families Against State Terrorism and the last three Commissioner of Police that the Jamaica Constabulary Force is notoriously inefficient and corrupt.

And Where:

Efforts to correct those deficiencies of the Jamaica Constabulary Force by the hiring of a number of High Ranking Police Officers from overseas have failed to bring about even marginal changes in the lowering crime and the perception of corruption in Jamaica

We the undersign call upon the Government of Jamaica to immediately:

1. remove the crime portfolio from the seemingly ineffective current Minister of National Security [Mr. Derrick Smith]

2. act on one or all of the numerous recommendations from the studies conducted to date

3. to reveal the Government’s Plan of action going forward to halt or drastically reduce number of murders and serious crimes that has put a stranglehold on Jamaica for the last 18 years
