Stop Ragging

To:  Citizens of India

We, the law-abiding CITIZENS of India, appeal to students, teachers, parents, educational institutions, the University Grants Commission, lawmakers, police, journalists and human rights activists to find ways of eliminating the menace of ragging in all its forms, once and for all.

We appeal to all first year STUDENTS who will become seniors this forthcoming session, not to rag their juniors, not treat them as slaves, not to ask them to undress and abuse them. We appeal to all students to delete the word ragging from their dictionaries.

We appeal to all TEACHERS and EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS in India to take a pro-active and pre-emptive approach towards ragging and not take it as a fact of life. Before let's another students hangs himself to a ceiling fan, let's make ragging a thing of the past. Please reach out to freshers in your institution and tell them to speak up against ragging.

We appeal to all PARENTS to make their children aware that ragging is a crime punishable by law, and that they should neither bow down before seniors, nor rag freshers. If your child tells you s/he's being ragged, approach the college authorities and the police immediately.

We appeal to the POLICE to take the issue seriously, to make surprise visits into college hostels and catch the guilty red-handed.

We appeal to the UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION to take action against colleges that are not able to curb ragging, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s 2001 judgement. The UGC should sent flying squads to educational institutions to get the inside story, rather than wait for another ragging suicide to happen and the principal to deny that it was due to ragging.

We appeal to all JOURNALISTS and editors not to glorify ragging by projecting it as ‘fun’. We appeal to them not to print pictures of singing and dancing in the name of ragging, but send their reporters and photographers inside hostels to expose how every hostel is a torture chamber.

We appeal to HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS to stop neglecting the issue of ragging.

We make this appeal because we owe it to the countless young men and women who have suffered unspeakable trauma, destroyed their careers, or committed suicide because of ragging.
