raise rent Law |
To: U.S. CongressWe are asking you to introduce legislation and/or to vote that will make it illegal for a landlord no matter what state to raise rent more than 5\% of the current rent and make it where a landlord cannot change the rent for 12 months even if they are on a month to month. We know that bills go up but there is no excuse to price gouge the American people.
Example of a horror stories
Disabled woman’s (we will call her Laura) rent starting out for a one bedroom was $445 Laura’s landlord decided at the end of lease by raising it to $630 (almost a 42\% increase) Laura had no choice but to pay it because she is in a wheelchair and cannot find any open handicap apartments in her town. This takes almost all of her Social Security Check. Landlord refused to sign new lease with her very next month raised it again to $830. Now she is on the street due to being evicted. Reason landlord gave: Section 8 will pay that amount. Real reason told other tenants did not want crippled person in apartment. Now Laura has gone to fair housing but still does not help her that she is on street. Also she has been told that legally landlord can do that
Laid off worker—we will call him George
George and his wife Tammy worked at the local factory when they were laid off and then the plant closed. They are drawing unemployment. Hearing this there lease was up and there landlord decided to raise their rent from 800 to 1800 a month. They could not afford on unemployment so he told them to get out now there whole family is on the street looking for work and a place to call home.
Now this is only 2 horror stories that are going on now here is an example of how this proposed law would help
Laura her new rent would be 467.25 not 630 then would be frozen for a year not go up to 830 next month
George new rent would be 840 not 1800
WE the signed are asking you to please support us in this
