Florida Reoffender Laws

To:  Governor Jeb Bush

Dear Governor Bush, Florida politicians, and the citizens of Florida:


We, the undersigned, are calling for the abolition of the following laws in the State of Florida, with retroactive effect:

PRISON RELEASEE REOFFENDER LAW

HABITUAL OFFENDER LAW

3 STRIKES AND THE MANDATORY MINIMUM LAW

(Contained within Florida Title XLVI Chapter 775 §§775.082 and 775.084)


The insanity of these laws is reflected in the following statement:

”A judge reluctantly gave a man life in prison after a $20 burglary, saying he had no choice under a state law that requires such terms for repeat offenders. Circuit Judge Bob Wattles called the punishment unjust and unfair.” -- WKMG-TV/DT Orlando | 7.16.03


We are becoming a society without human compassion; a society that commits more atrocities than those we choose to condemn. We need to make a change now.


Harsher laws have never been the answer to reducing crime. Crime rates rise and fall with the economy. Education, positive values, and job opportunities reduce crime.
