Bike/Bus Lanes in LA County

To:  All politicians responsible for transportation in Los Angeles county

For more than 50 years, traffic in Los Angeles has centered around automobile travel. Freeways are expanded, roads are widened, and even street parking has been eliminated in order to reduce auto travel times.

As a result of this narrow view of transportation, we have destroyed alternative modes of transportation in this city. Walking is discouraged when roads are widened, as is biking. Because driving is so dominant, and because the city can only fit so many cars, the city must grow more and more while traffic gets worse and worse. Sprawl destroys natural fauna and flora, not to mention the inefficiencies of spreading water, electricity, and oil, across a large land area.

One of the easiest ways to reverse this process of sprawl and decreased travel options is to support more bike/bus lanes. These carry more people than normal automobile traffic lanes and give people options so that they do not have to spend so much money to maintain a car-centric lifestyle.

As such, we, the undersigned, would like to see more bike/bus lanes in the city of Los Angeles. Major streets could easily fit these by squeezing current lanes (giving the added benefit of calmer traffic which leads to a more desirable walking environment). This is a simple idea which would aid in the transportation of this city. It is time that we looked at transportation as a whole instead of thinking just about cars.
