Rundle Mall Glass Lifts

To:  Renaissance Centre Central Management et al.

To whom it may concern,

We, the undersigned, have been disappointed to discover that in the iconic glass lifts in Rundle Mall, there are now signs which read

“Joyrides are prohibited in this building!
These lifts are for business use only. Trespassers will be prosecuted.
Central Management.”

The reason for our disappointment is that Adelaide has so few tourist attractions, and the lifts have been an unofficial one since the lifts were installed. The official loss of yet another activity to do with visiting friends is very regrettable and nowhere else is it so easy to show a panoramic view of Rundle Street.

We respectfully request that you reconsider and allow the use of your glass lifts by tourists.

We realise that lifts require maintenance, cleaning and power, that the staff and patrons of the building must also use the lifts, and that some people are probably using them irresponsibly with no supervision. However we’re hoping that the benefit to the city and our already diminishing set of tourist attractions might outweigh that.

Having external glass lifts and only allowing them to be used for business purposes is missing an opportunity, both for you and for the city. We urge you to change your view of it from an inconvenience to a positive feature of your building, regardless of current signs or previous discouragement. There are many examples world wide of business oriented transport systems or privately owned architectural features that double as tourist attractions with little to no inconvenience to the owners or patrons.

We suggest that alternatives to the current sign and attitude are available. If you do not wish to simply remove the sign and return to old ways, a new sign requesting that people not use the lifts except for business purposes between certain times when staff and patrons most need the lifts could prevent inconvenience. Keeping one lift open for tourism as well as business, is an option. A donation box or a minor sponsorship could also assist you. A sponsorship and a plaque reading “These lifts are provided to you by [company name]” could be a valuable contribution to the lifts’ maintenance, and allow you to continue to contribute to Adelaide’s tourism industry, in an official capacity.

We urge you to take the better option rather than the easier one.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
