As you are aware, Ms. Zahra Kazemi, a Canadian-Iranian photojournalist was arrested on June 23 for taking photographs of protestors outside Evin prison in northern Tehran. They were demanding the release of relatives locked up during last month's wave of anti-regime protests; demonstrations that were met with a tough crackdown. After her interrogation she was rushed to hospital, apparently in a coma. She died of a brain hemorrhage on July 12, 2003. She was so savagely and barbarically beaten that she went into a coma, yet the Iranian authorities shamelessly indicated that she had suffered a "brain hemorrhage" during her interrogation.

Her arrest coincided with the popular uprising and civil disobedience of tens of thousands of courageous Iranian students who were protesting and demanding freedom and democracy from the backward and theocratic regime.

Iran is refusing to allow Canada to carry out its own investigation into her death and will not allow her body to be returned to Canada for an autopsy to be carried out. We respectfully request that the UN send a impartial medical team to investigate and pursue the murder of, not only Ms. Kazimi, but also the murder and imprisonment of Iranian Journalists, writers, political activist, university students and other political people.
