Sasakamoose: Hockey Hall of Fame

We the undersigned, do hereby petition the Selection Committee of Hockey Hall of Fame to nominate and induct Mr. Fred Sasakamoose to the Hockey Hall of Fame. In signing this petition, we thus implore the Nominating Committee to hear, and act immediately upon our collective voice of reason and support for Mr. Sasakamoose.

Fred Sasakamoose is one of the Greatest Men in the History of Sport, and this petition is conducted to commemorate his contribution to the Native Community, The Game of Hockey, and Canadian & American History. Fred Sasakamoose was the First Aboriginal to play hockey in the National Hockey League.

Sasakamoose played junior hockey for the Moose Jaw Canucks of the Western Hockey League, where he won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 1952-1953 Season. The same season Sasakamoose went from Junior Hockey to the National Hockey League for the remainder of the season, at the young age of 19.

Sasakamoose became involved in Indian Leadership, and was named Chief for 6 years. He became a builder of Indian Sports and Recreation and promoted youth participation for the purpose of providing activities for young aboriginal children. Currently, Fred is on the board of the NHL Diversity Task Force. Please take the time to read more about this wonderful man, and sign this petition to honor his contribution to sport and society.

Social Change through Sport:
The World of Sports has always been a catalyst for social change and healing throughout history. In 1936, Jesse Owens shocked the entire World with his 4 Olympic Medals within the confines of the Nazi Regime, and influenced the World that we as people can come together as one.

America, with all its victories and glory, was still basking in a stew of racial inequality when Baseball, America's National Pastime, was the catalyst of change, and the man was Jackie Robinson.

Hockey is Canada's Sport; Canada is hockey. With the Original 6 teams, Montreal & Toronto in Canada, and 4 American Teams (Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and New York), the top professional hockey league was the true North American Sports League. On both sides of the border social injustice towards the Native Community prevailed, until one man, Fred Sasakamoose; an Aboriginal raised in Canada, traveled to America, and the windy city of Chicago, to represent and earn respect for his people.

In 1936, the Olympics served as the arena for Jesse Owens, and the vision of World Peace. In 1947, Baseball, America's Game, and Jackie Robinson provided a vision for a better America. In 1953, Hockey, Canada's Sport, with an American based League. Hockey was the venue for a man to bring awareness of the plight of the Aboriginal People throughout North America, that man was Fred Sasakamoose, and he opened the door for minority players in the National Hockey League.

Hockey Hall of Fame: we will begin a campaign to have Fred Sasakamoose inducted and recognized into the Hockey HOF. Our next phase will include recognition by the Governments of Canada, the United States, and Governing Sporting & Public Associations.
