Save the Australian National Academy of Music

Dear Minister Garrett,

Australian National Academy of Music musicians are among the best in the country. The unique programs at the Academy have, since 1995, become fundamental to the development of highly sophisticated and competitive young artists. In recent years, the leadership of Brett Dean has seen the Academy become positioned as a principal feeder to Australian professional orchestras and chamber music ensembles.

If the intensive ‘hothouse’ training environment provided by Australian National Academy of Music did not exist, then the best of Australia’s young musical talent will simply seek further development overseas – and Australia’s orchestras and concert platforms will be all the poorer for it. The Australian National Academy of Music keeps Australia’s elite musicians in Australia, and provides the critical sustenance and renewal to Australia’s cultural well-being.

In recent years the Academy has also comprehensively dominated the major national music competitions.

The Academy program is unique in Australia and much admired internationally.

I respectfully urge a reversal of your decision to close what is an essential institution in the development of Australian professional music life.
