Save Oriental City

We, the undersigned, believe that Oriental City is London's 'true chinatown', a valuable asset to the cultural identity of London as a whole, and a home away from home for London's large British-Chinese and South East asian communities.

The shopping and cultural centre, formally Yaohan Plaza gives the only truly oriental experience in London, particularly in the North. We believe that Oriental City is more valuable as a place for people of all races, backgrounds and realms of society to enjoy a taste of Asian culture and most of all, enjoy themselves.

We believe that the centre provides an outlet for small asian businesses which would not necessarily be able to survive elsewhere. Several businesses in the centre fill a niche market, and appeal mainly to those 10,000 visitors that visit the centre each month. Where else can you find such an easily accessible and wide range of South-East Asian products?

We believe that the current plans to develop the site are unsuitable for the community. We do not want such drastic change, especially when it takes the core of our culture away from us. No possible substitute could ever amount to importance of Oriental City to us.

We believe Oriental City is successful because of the loyalty of the people that enjoy it so much.

We believe that it is pointless to try and cash in on the loyalty of these people.

We are appealing to have the plans to take down Oriental City, and thus remove the businesses that are currently there, and destroying the renowned food court, Sega Park (which is an extremely profitable part of the centre, always busy and always vibrant), and supermarket, cancelled or otherwise prevented from continuing.

Please, consider our call.

Save the real chinatown.
