3/12/09 ABC CHICAGO - "Chicago's Sears Tower will be renamed Willis Tower after an incoming tenant, according to a press release from Willis Group Holdings of London. The insurance broker plans to move 500 associates into 140,000 square feet of space on multiple floors of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. The building is owned by 233 S. Wacker Drive LLC, a real estate investment group formed in 2004 to purchase the tower."
How do you feel about one of Chicago's iconic towers being renamed after an insurance group you've never heard of before now? Bit by bit we're losing the identifying pieces of our city's heritage and this time I mean to see it stopped in its tracks!
Macy's came in here and unceremoniously dumped the Marshall-Fields name and how did that work out for them? Not so well - sales were far lower than expected because out of sheer stubbornness Chicagoans started shopping elsewhere. Because we Chicagoans take pride in our city and the people and institutions that made us great. What's next if we let this happen unopposed? Renaming the Cubs when they're sold? Renaming Wrigley?? How about the Hancock? Let's show these corporate enterprises that while money can often buy our politicians, it can't buy the people who love this city. There are more of us than there are of them and we should make our voices heard!
