Oppose the appointment of a Secretary of the Arts

To:  President Barack Obama

There has been a call by prominent members of American arts organizations to create a Secretary of the Arts post. We the undersigned believe that the establishment of this post will harm the independence from government enjoyed by our diverse arts communities. Endowments, such as the NEA, already manage public arts funding. Therefore, we oppose the creation of a Secretary [or "Czar"] of the Arts.
