Serie A for Singapore

We, fans of the Italian Serie A in Singapore, are appalled at StarHub’s lack of interest in negotiating fervently for coverage of the Italian Serie A on Super Sports.

According to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS – http://www.iffhs.de/), the Italian Serie A ranks as the 3rd Strongest National League of the World 2004, just behind Spain’s La Liga and the English Premier League.

Furthermore, IFFHS Club World Rankings (for the period of 1 September 2004 to 30 August 2005) rank Italy’s own FC Internazionale Milano and Milan AC as the 1st and 3rd best clubs in the world respectively.

StarHub claims that “we need to maximise our resources by purchasing programmes that will appeal to and satisfy the needs of our range of customers” as well as “ensure that we cater to the needs and desires of all our customers, and continue to provide great breadth and depth of sports programming”.

It is clear that this “great breadth and depth” will never be reached, and the “range of customers” not satisfied if StarHub is unable to provide coverage of the Italian Serie A – clearly a league with a superbly high standing on the world stage. Also, it is neither fair and nor wise of StarHub to assume football fans are all alike and will be easily pleased with just any type of football being broadcast on their channels.

While less popular leagues such as the Dutch Casino Eredivisie, French Ligue 1 and even Scottish Premier League are being broadcast on selected opt-in channels, we fans of the Italian Serie A should not be deprived of our brand of football – especially since we are willing to pay for it and are open to subscribing to opt-in channels, an option provided to fans of the Dutch, French and Scottish leagues.

Therefore, we strongly urge StarHub to press on in their negotiations for broadcast rights of the Italian Serie A until a suitable agreement can be reached, and call for the highest standards of football on our television stations once again.
