No 2008 Olympic Torch In San Francisco

To:  The Honorable Gavin Newsom, Mayor, San Francisco, CA, U.S.A.

The Olympic Torch Relay is scheduled to include San Francisco on April 9, 2008. China has occupied Tibet for more than fifty years, during which time the Tibetan people have been subjected to gross human rights abuses, and their culture and identity has been forcibly repressed. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is a tremendous opportunity for global honor and recognition of the Chinese people. However, China will never achieve this global acceptance until its government ends its occupation of Tibet, and shows respect for human rights.

Therefore, we urge you, as Mayor of San Francisco, to oppose the Olympic Torch Relay, and withdraw any official welcome of it in San Francisco.
