It's Fair to Share - Permitting Income Splitting in Canada

To:  Government of Canada

We the undersigned urge the Government of Canada to permit personal taxation based on joint or household income as one tax option. We feel that permitting households to share or split income is consistent with how many couples relate to each other, and treats all adults in the home as equal partners, none as lesser dependents.

Allowing the option of income splitting is a key way to respect the unpaid care sector of an economy. We ask this in recognition that it is already tax policy in at least 14 other nations and we learn from their experience.

Permitting taxation based on sharing of income is a vital element of the advancement of women's equality.

We urge the members of all levels of government, particularly all members of the House of Commons, senators and key civil servants, the general public and the press to attend our conference in the Conference Room, West Block, Parliament Hill on Tuesday January 30 2007 from 10 AM to 2 PM to hear our presentations, share our research and discuss the merits of this petition.
