WE STATEN ISLANDERS AND CONCERNED OTHERS:
Artists, musicians, dancers, poets, curators, former artists-in-residence,
volunteers and frequent visitors to Snug Harbor Cultural Center (SHCC)
ARE ALARMED BY THE NEGATIVE DEVELOPMENTS LISTED BELOW
which are direct results of the current administration’s arbitrary, unilateral decisions
in the service of a grandiose and misguided vision
and in direct contradiction to Snug Harbor Cultural Center’s Mission Statement:
to create “a spirit of community and to support the arts”

Kids on Stage Final Performance - GONE
Music Together by Janet Savage - GONE
First Night Festivities - GONE
Harmony Fair - GONE
Dickens Festival - GONE
Melville's Cafe - GONE

Newhouse Center Contemporary Art Exhibition Schedule - EVISCERATED
Matrons Building Art Studios - GONE
Studio Arts Program - 30 rentals reduced to 10 - UNSUPPORTED
Peer Review Panels to fairly screen potential exhibitors - GONE
Art Lab – UNCERTAIN FUTURE
Exhibition spaces – DARK, POORLY UTILIZED, OR SHUT
Exhibitions – MARGINALLY INTERESTING AND ARBITRARY
Community access to site - ARBITRARILY LIMITED
Directional Signage - POOR
Handicapped Access – SEVERELY COMPROMISED
Maintenance of buildings and site - POOR
Trellis & Gazebo – RESTORED LESS THAN 10 YEARS AGO – IN DISREPAIR
Chinese Scholar’s Garden – POORLY MAINTAINED


JUST THREE SHORT YEARS AGO SHCC HAD A WORLD CLASS EXHIBITION SCHEDULE, THRIVING ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE AND STUDIO PROGRAMS, INCREASING RESPECT AS A VENUE, AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN ALL ITS RESOURCES. THE STATEN ISLAND ARTIST COMMUNITY DEMANDS A RETURN TO “A SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY.”
