Manifesto against Spiderman's Brand New Day - We want our old Spiderman back

This is a manifesto against Spiderman's Brand New Day. It is adressed to Mr. Joe Quesada, Marvel's Editor in Chief. We have written it in two languages, English and Spanish, and we encourage you to sign our petition to have our old Spiderman back.

Éste es un manifiesto en contra de la reciente etapa "Un Nuevo Día" (Brand New Day) de Spiderman. Está dirigida al Sr. Joe Quesada, Editor Jefe de marvel. La hemos escrito en dos lenguas, Inglés y Español, y os animamos a firmar nuestra petición para traer de vuelta a nuestro Spiderman de siempre.

To the attention of Mr. Quesada, Marvel’s editor in chief:

We are a group of Spiderman comics' readers. This letter is about the new course taken by “The Amazing Spiderman”. We want to express our disagreement with all the changes made from “The Amazing Spiderman 546” that opened the “Brand New Day” era, and we want to expose you all the reasons why the signatories to this letter have stopped buying Spiderman.

In the first place, we think that Mary Jane is the real heroine in Spiderman’s story. From the day in which she stood by a broken Peter who was crying Gwen’s death, we knew that she was not the thoughtless, crazy girl she pretended to be.
There have been writers who have treated her carefully and respectfully to tell us good stories in which she was as important as her husband. They wrote that kind of stories because they respected and loved Mary Jane, and they made an effort to tell us stories in which she played an important role.
You don’t know how to do it; that is the reason why you have got rid of her. Your lack of talent and your inability to treat one of the best secondary characters in the history of comics have made you take the easiest way. If you made an effort to tell us good stories, you would see Mary Jane giving us the best in her.

Instead, you have given us Mephisto, and absurd character in Spiderman’s universe, who forces Peter and Mary Jane to take the most absurd decision in their lives: they sacrifice their love for an old-fashioned character who has been bothering us for a long time, except for Strazinsky’s years (you know, it is possible to tell good stories, isn’t it?).
You also tell us that Mephisto has changed nothing (of course, he does not have the ability to do that, does he?) but their memories. So, Peter and Mary Jane are still married but they do not remember it. Therefore, if they had any affair with another person, they would become adulterers!
In addition, Mephisto becomes the winner. You know, we would not like our children to read that type of moral. You have also made Mary Jane a liar because of her secret pact with the demon.
You also promise to tell us what happened between Peter and Mary Jane in Amazing Spiderman 600, but you know, we already know what happened between them: they got married. Mephisto changed nothing but their memories, didn’t he? So, whatever you tell us in Amazing 600 will be a lie.

Moreover, you tell us that there has been a “gap” in time. But the fact is that we like to read our comics, we do not like to know what happens in them according to your words in an interview.

All in all, your biggest mistake has been Harry’s return and your future explanation’s promise about it.
You needn’t do that. Harry’s return belongs to that kind of stupid dramatic resource consisting of bringing dead characters back to life. Harry has nothing else to add nowadays.

You also say that this is not the best solution but that it will take Spiderman where you want him to be. We are not interested in your solution because you should know that the end doesn’t justify the means.

Apart from that, you declared that veteran readers will get bored looking for incoherence in Spiderman’s history and you make nice promises to the new readers.
That is the point. You are going to tell us stories that have already been told, twice told tales. But this time, they will be told in a worse way. This is the reason why you encourage newcomers to read your new Spiderman.

This is the way you justify your lack of imagination and your deep contempt for veteran readers. You do not care about those readers who have kept Spiderman alive along the years; you are only interested in fans who do not know anything about Spiderman, fans who can’t compare your new stories with the ones from the past. You only care about those readers who will be reading Spiderman for one or two years. Just the readers that you need to take profits from Spiderman’s films.

Meanwhile, you tell us no stories because you have nothing to tell. From time to time, you give us a brief story to explain your own incoherence. And you even dare to tell us that we will get used to it, just as if we had no criteria and could accept anything.

The signatories to this letter are not going to buy any Spiderman comic until the pact with Mephisto has been unmade; we will not read Spiderman any more until Peter and Mary Jane have been married again; we do not want to know anything about your new stories until Harry has gone back to his tomb.

Just one more thing Mr. Quesada; if you realize that “The Amazing Spiderman” sales are dropping dangerously, do not worry; you will get used to it.

A la atención del Señor Quesada, editor jefe de Marvel:

Somos un grupo de lectores de las distintas series protagonizadas por Spider-man. La presente carta está relacionada con el nuevo rumbo que han tomado los acontecimientos de la serie “The Amazing Spiderman”, de la cual todos nosotros somos lectores. Queremos expresar nuestra disconformidad con los cambios que hemos podido leer a partir del nº 546 de la colección perteneciente a la etapa conocida como “Brand New Day” y exponerle los motivos por los que todos los que respaldamos esta misiva hemos dejado de comprar “The Amazing Spiderman”.

En primer lugar nos gustaría decirle que consideramos a Mary Jane Watson como verdadero coprotagonista de la colección. Desde aquel lejano día en el que ella cerró la puerta de la calle para quedarse con un Peter Parker destrozado por el asesinato de Gwen Stacy, supimos que aquella chica pelirroja, no era la loca atolondrada que fingía ser. Autores anteriores supieron tratarla con el cariño y respeto que merece y nos contaron muy buenas historias donde ella era casi un elemento tan importante como su marido. Eso es así porque respetaban y amaban al personaje, y se esforzaban en contar historias donde desempeñaba un papel importante. Ustedes no saben hacerlo, por eso la han quitado de en medio. Su falta total de talento, su incompetencia total y absoluta para tratar bien a uno de los mejores secundarios de la historia del comic, les ha hecho tomar un camino cobarde y fácil. Trabajen, esfuércense, cuenten buenas historias y verán cómo Mary Jane Watson dará de sí todo lo que lleva dentro, que es mucho.

En lugar de eso, meten por el medio una figura absurda, la de Mephisto, asegurando este personaje que no desea almas (¿pero este mismo personaje, no solía ir detrás del alma de Silver Surver, o es otro Mephisto?), y con una incoherencia propia de quien no sabe qué hacer para escribir buenas historias, hace que Peter Parker y Mary Jane tomen la decisión más absurda de su vida, sacrificando su amor por un personaje obsoleto que ya estorba en la colección desde la última glaciación, si bien Straczynski demostró que se podían contar buenas historias con la tía May (¿ve como se pueden contar cosas buenas, si se quiere?). No contentos con hacer que los protagonistas de comporten como idiotas, nos dicen que Mephisto no ha cambiado nada (lógico, pues no tiene ese poder), sino sólo los recuerdos. Eso hace que Peter y Mary Jane sigan casados, pero no lo recuerdan. Por consiguiente, cualquier relación que pudieran tener con terceras personas es un adulterio. Igualmente, Mephisto sale victorioso. El Mal triunfa sobre el Amor, cosa a todas luces ruin y despreciable, con una extraña moraleja que no nos gustaría que leyeran nuestro hijos, y todo ello a pesar del pacto secreto que Mary Jane hace con el demonio y con la promesa que le hace a Peter. Así, usted ha convertido a Mary Jane en una embustera. Nos promete contar qué pasó entre ellos para el número 600. Ya lo sabemos; se casaron. Mephisto no cambió nada, salvo recuerdos, ¿no es así? Por tanto lo que usted pretende contar es mentira.

Sin saber cómo ni por qué usted nos dice que ha habido un salto en el tiempo. Lo sabemos porque lo dice usted, pero a nosotros nos gusta leer comics donde podamos saber qué ocurre por lo que se ve en el propio comic, no por lo que usted diga en diversas entrevistas. Lo más grave de esto es la recuperación de Harry y la promesa de una futura explicación. Eso ya lo tenemos nosotros. Se trata de la estúpida moda que han puesto en marcha incompetentes para conseguir golpes de efecto mediante la resurrección sistemática de personajes muertos y enterrados. Harry no aporta nada aquí, ni ahora. Sólo es una de sus cortinas de humo para que la serie avance entre la mediocridad y cada cierto tiempo explicar alguna incoherencia. Nos habla de que todo esto no es quizá el mejor camino posible pero que llevará a Spideraman a donde ustedes quieren. No nos interesa lo que ustedes quieren porque el fin no justifica los medios, y mucho más importante que llevar a Spiderman a donde sea, es el camino para llevarlo allí.

Usted habla de que los lectores veteranos se aburrirán buscando incoherencias, y promete golosinas para los lectores noveles. Exacto. Ustedes se dedican a contar malamente historias ya leídas, ya contadas otras veces. Los lectores noveles no las han leído, claro, y por tanto animan a dichos lectores a disfrutar se la serie. De esa manera, ustedes justifican su falta total de imaginación, sus pocas ganas de hacer un trabajo digno, y su desprecio total hacia los lectores antiguos. No les interesan lectores que duren, que mantengan la serie viva durante años, sino un tipo lector puntual, que no conozca bien al personaje y por tanto no tenga elementos para comparar, y que lea la colección uno o dos años. Lo justo para sacar buenos beneficios de las películas. Entre tanto, ustedes no cuentan nada porque no tienen nada que contar. De vez en cuando, alguna breve saga para explicar malamente sus propias incoherencias, y así van tirando. Y encima tiene la desfachatez de decirnos que nos acostumbraremos, como si no tuviéramos criterio alguno y tuviéramos que tragar lo que nos echen. Los que firmamos esta misiva, no compraremos ninguna colección de Spiderman hasta que no se deshaga el trato con Mephisto, hasta que Mary Jane no vuelva a estar felizmente casada con Peter Parker y hasta que Harry no vuelva a la tumba, de donde no tenía que haber salido jamás. Una última cosa, Sr. Quesada, si las ventas de Spiderman disminuyen peligrosamente, no se preocupe. Se acostumbrará.
