Save Our Music

We (the undersigned) agree that the Violence Reduction Program proposed by the City of Winston-Salem is a good idea. The outline of preventive measures are logical suggestions to reduce violence in nightclubs and we all appreciate safe environments to enjoy live entertainment. But rather than approaching the problem of violence with threats of entertainment restrictions, we suggest a collaborative effort to encourage productive communication and cooperative education, thereby providing a more affective solution.

The current Violence Reduction Program outline utilizes restrictions of live music to enforce nightclub compliance with the program. This approach implies entertainment is to blame for the violence of a few careless individuals. Musicians who live in Winston-Salem would be greatly affected by such restrictions, and as a result would feel a lack of support from the city to continue living and working in this area. Live music is a vital aspect of the arts and this message is contrary to the highly promoted slogan of Winston-Salem as a “City of the Arts.”

We suggest that thorough and easy to understand Violence Reduction Program booklets be provided by the City of Winston-Salem to every nightclub employee in the area as required reading. We also suggest that information posters with patron guidelines be distributed to nightclubs and posted in highly visible locations. We believe education is a better approach to reducing violence than entertainment restrictions. Please consider our proposal and support our local musicians and live music venues as important aspects of our community.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
