Srebarna Pelican Colony

We at www.srebarnabirding.com and those undersigned, welcome fresh ideas from concerned individuals, groups and organisations who have suggestions on how to ensure an ongoing, protected, safe and sustainable environment at the Srebarna Biosphere Reserve (Srebarna Managed Reserve). We call upon the MOEW RIOS EC and other bodies responsible to take actions to this end. We further wish to highlight the problem of illegal hunting both along the Danube and at it's Delta since seeing evidence of the shooting of Dalmatian Pelicans in Romania in Jan 2009. Save Srebarna. Save the Pelicans.

We the undersigned call upon the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria, The European Union Commission, RIOS The Ministry of Environment and Water to take action to ensure the ongoing success of the Breeding Dalmatian Pelican colony at Srebarna Biosphere Reserve in North-East Bulgaria. We ask for commitment to and monetary assistance with implementing the following actions;

1) The construction of a protective boundary fence that will deny access to the breeding site to land based predators. This will be done at a time sensitive to the colonies breeding activities and with as little impact as possible on the birds.

2) The location of a discreet hide at an environmentally sympathetic distance to be staffed by both paid and volunteer workers who will guard the sites during the breeding season thereby ensuring the safety of future egg clutches and guaranteeing successful fledging.
