Dear Mayor and Dallas City Council Members:
In weeks past, there has been much discussion over the renaming of Industrial Boulevard. Suggested names have been proposed like Cesar Chavez, Edie Bernice Johnson and Riverside.
According to Dallas City Hall, a recent poll stated that Cesar Chavez was the overwhelming winner for the renaming. However, a recent poll by Dallas ABC news affiliate WFAA showed at the drafting of this petition that 85\% of their viewers strongly oppose this initiative and do not want Industrial Boulevard renamed for Chavez. While Chavez was a political leader and activist and who did much good, he was not a citizen of Dallas nor did he do his primary works here.
Many citizens in Dallas are requesting that the renaming of Industrial Boulevard honor one of our own and thereby we respectfully request that the Dallas City Council honor Dallas' own legendary son, Stevie Ray Vaughan by renaming Industrial Boulevard in his honor.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas and raised in the Oak Cliff area; his final resting place is at Laurel Land Cemetery. He was a legendary guitarist who has brought great pride to our city. Some of the accolades awarded to honor Stevie include: the city of Austin erecting a statue in his honor, Fender issuing a Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature Stratocaster guitar, he is noted as a major influence on musicians such as David Bowie, John Mayer, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang.
In spite of all of these accolades, Stevie is rarely recognized in his own home town of Dallas.
So in closing Mr. Mayor and City Council Members, we respectfully ask that you please honor Dallas' legendary son, Stevie Ray Vaughan by renaming Industrial Boulevard in his honor and give him the rightful recognition in his own hometown that the rest of the world is so willing to bestow upon his memory.
