My grandmother lived at 15 Smith Street in the early 20th century and the history of its occupants professions is rich and interesting, e.g. candle makers and printers.

Listed Buildings 15 and 16 Smith Street

Dear Madam,

When the Wellington Square development was first proposed there was a public meeting to explain the details and to seek opinion.

At that meeting I asked for the Georgian dwelling in Smith Street to be retained. I understand that it was a Listed Building.

Well it has been retained but it is now in a dreadful state of repair. The downcomer is broken and consequently rain water is coming down the corner of the building and various weeds and plants are growing there. In its present state it is hardly worth retaining.

One remembers what happened when a large part of the buildings in the High Street were knocked down to build the Castlegate Centre. When it was realised what has been done it seems efforts were made to retain what was left and Finkle Street was repaired and the Green Dragon Yard developed.

It would not take a great deal of money to repair the Smith Street property and I hope that some grant can be given for it to be done.

PETITION:
WE WANT 15 AND 16 SMITH STREET, STOCKTON-ON-TEES TO BE RESTORED. IDEALLY, WE WISH FOR THE LOCAL COUNCIL TO TAKE OVER OWNERSHIP OF THESE BUILDINGS AND MAKE GOOD USE OF THEM FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, FOR EXAMPLE PERHAPS TURNING THEM INTO A SMALL LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM, BUT IN ANY CASE WE WANT THESE BUILDINGS TO BE BROUGHT UP TO A GOOD GRADE II LISTING STANDARD AND NOT BE LEFT IN A STATE OF DISREPAIR.
