Stop ATCA Now! |
To: The Office of the United States Trade Representative, the European Comission, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and other participating governmental agenciesWe, the Undersigned, find the proposal of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement to be a reprehensible action, and demand that the above governmental bodies refuse to participate in it.
The instatement of ACTA is not a guarantee for the safety of people, but for the security of the various corporate interests who risk minute financial loss at the hands of piracy. The maximization of their profit is not worth the overwhelming damage that such a law will inflict on our personal liberties. Furthermore, the overhaul ACTA will create will be massive and will cripple governmental efficiency rather than catch IP offenders.
IP rights are an important and pressing issue today, but the solution is level-headed reform, not enforcement of such a severe law that has the potential to eliminate civil liberties. Such harsh measures discourage innovation rather then encourage it, and the potential for abuse with a law like ACTA is too great to risk its implementation.
Sincerely,
