We, the undersigned, are calling for strict action to be taken against the Carleton University Students' Association -CUSA- following their November 25, 2008 decision to stop funding Cystic Fibrosis through Shinerama on the grounds the disease only affects white men
WHEREAS CUSA passed said motion without consulting the students they represent through an appropriate forum such as a referendum;
WHEREAS CUSA acted on blantantly false information, namely that cystic fibrosis mainly affects white men;
WHEREAS funding through Shinerama should not be cut on the basis of said false information;
WHEREAS cystic fibrosis actually affects a diverse group of men, women, and children of all ages, races, and origins;
WHEREAS Carleton University students, graduates, faculty, and staff have been disgraced and disappointed such a decision was made;
WHEREAS all councillors of CUSA, including Donnie Northrup -the person who drafted such a proposal- and Brittany Smyth -association president- need to be severely reprimanded for their conduct, including a full public apology for drafting and passing such a proposal; and
WHEREAS Carleton University students, graduates, faculty, and staff have lost confidence in proper student representation from CUSA, and ask that a more representative student government be formed.
Upon the conclusion of this petition, this will be forwarded to Nick Bergamini, one of the only councillors against the motion, CUSA executives, as well as the university President, Doctor Roseann O'Reilly Runte.
