A CALL TO END THE OUTSOURCING OF TORTURE THROUGH EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION
We wish to express our gravest concern over the practice of Extraordinary Rendition whereby U.S. officials are secretly transferring individuals, without any hint of due process, for interrogation by countries that are known to practice state sanctioned torture and murder.
Such rendition is contrary to international law, the laws of the United States, the constitutional protections against torture or inhuman treatment and the values upon which the United States was founded.
The New York City Bar Association and the New York University Law School concluded in their joint report of October 2004 that Extraordinary Rendition is prohibited by both international and domestic law and that Extraordinary Renditions are a perversion of justice that must be exposed and brought to an end.
We call upon Congress to act immediately to:
1. Stop Extraordinary Rendition.
2. Cause all persons who have been rendered to be identified and located to ensure they are granted the benefit of due process.
