Recently it has become clear that Norwegian band "Fitts For Fight" has
been using publicly released material from micromusic and demoscene
musicians as their own music without permissions or credits.
The reuse of the material is clear and obvious theft : the band simply sings
over the original songs, which are totally unchanged. The lyrics
themselves are uninspired, and certainly not in keeping with original
musicians artistic vision. To repeat, no permission was given by the
original artists, and no credit given. "Fitts For Fight" have claimed the
music to be entirely their own work.
This is already highly disreputable behaviour, and clear theft.
However, "Fitts For Fight" have been receiving money for this music in the
form of royalties and payment for live performances. The original tunes
were all released for free, for enjoyment of all those interested in
lo-tech music. Needless to say, no money was given to the original
artists.
To steal something is bad, but "Fitts For Fight" have stolen from people
who make no, or almost no profit from their music. It is like shoplifting
from a charity shop, and then selling the stuff on the street outside.
Except even worse, as they claim artistic credits for everything that they
took.
So: please speak out your support to the real artists from micromusic and the demoscene,
because they want to share their music for free without anyone abusing that freedom
and claiming it as their own!
