Reducing Plastic Bag Consumption in the HRM |
To: Halifax Regional CouncilLarge cities, such as San Francisco and Toronto, and even entire countries, including Australia and China, have taken a stand against the use of one-time-use plastic shopping bags. Some of these countries, cities and towns throughout the world have banned the use of the bags completely while some have made it mandatory for all stores to charge for each bag. Already in Halifax, Atlantic Superstore has made a stand and each plastic bag costs a customer $0.05. It is time, however, that Halifax makes a move similar to that of Toronto, which charges for every bag used.

Another video clip, which is part of a documentary by BBC, shows common scenes throughout our beaches, roadsides and fields.

These videos don't even touch on the amount of pollution emitted every day to maintain the world's colossal demand for plastic bags. Reusable bags can be purchased for as little as a dollar and can save dozens of those bags that simply pile up under our sinks.
By adding our names to the list we wish in helping to take the first step in addressing the plastic bag problem in our city by requiring stores in the HRM to charge for the use of plastic shopping bags.
Sincerely,
