This petition has been created in opposition to the naming of the superbug "New Delhi Metallo Beta Lactamase -1" (NDM-1) which is misleading and appears to be inappropriately linked with the capital of India - New Delhi.

A recent research published in UK's medical journal The Lancet warned that a bacteria called Superbug NDM-1 could spread around the world quickly and there are potentially no drug for it due to it's resistance for Anti-biotics.

India has reacted strongly to the study linking drug-resistant superbug detected in Britain to India and said the bacteria are not a public health threat. It said Indian hospitals were safe as a number of such bacteria survive in nature and were reported from several other countries.

What disturbs us the most is that this bacteria is named as New Delhi Metallo Beta Lactamase -1 (NDM-1) after the capital city of our country creating a misconception that the point of origin is India.

India has a rich diverse history and we do not want our capital city to be linked with the name of a bacteria that has the potential to spread everywhere and kill thousands of people.

We request "International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP)" to avoid using "New Delhi" in the name of this bacteria which is currently called "New Delhi metallo beta lactamase -1 (NDM-1)".
