Support Taino Rights to Their Ancestral Remains and Sacred Sites in Puerto Rico

To:  Governor Sila Calderon of Puerto Rico

INDIVIDUALLY, we raise our voices, united in harmony to petition the Government of Puerto Rico to address these concerns. Under Puerto Rico's Constitution the freedom of religion is the fundamental right of all Peoples; therefore:

HONOR our ancestors who must be recovered and reburied in the resting places chosen by them, through proper ceremonial protocol to release Ancient Spirits who walk among us waiting and crying out to rest in peace;

UNITE to end the removal and display of our Ancestral Remains and Sacred Artifacts for whatever purpose or reason, science or for so-called cultural/education purposes throughout Puerto Rico and Vieques especially as a means to promote or generate tourism

CEASE the erecting of any symbols of genocide such as monuments to early Spanish colonizers who promoted and practiced genocide and slavery of the Taino/Carib Peoples and African Peoples.

HONOR and declare our Sacred Ceremonial Centers and other Sacred Sites throughout the Island Sacred Grounds, which must be respected through the proper spiritual protocol necessary to enter these.

ENSURE that any governmental projects promoting tourism go hand in hand with protecting and safeguarding the integrity of local Taino culture, Sacred Sites and the environment.

RESTORE the rights of the Taino People to access their sacred sites.

AUTHORIZE legislation forbidding the continued desecration of Taino Burial Sites, the display of Ancestral Remains and Sacred Artifacts.

RESOLVE to use replicas to satisfy the alleged need for education.

ENFORCE the real need to respect Taino Burial Sites, Ancestral Remains, Sacred Artifacts, Ceremonial Centers, Sacred Grounds and the fundamental human rights of the Taino People as Peoples as recognized under international law.

INSPIRIT the release of Ancient Spirits to set an example for the world community to see and aspire to.

TAKE the necessary measures to undo wherever possible and correct wherever necessary the injustices and misconceptions of more than 500 years.

ORDAIN an end to the continued cruel attempts to ridicule, and destroy Taino culture, arts, spiritual practices, the environment, our Earth Mother and all living things upon which we all depend.
