Stand Up For Campus Workers |
To: The University of Michigan Board of RegentsEach day the University of Michigan is able to function due to the hard work and dedication of literally thousands of laborers- groundskeepers, technical support, cafeteria workers, and many others who maintain our University community. However, despite their importance, these largely invisible individuals are routinely denied benefits, support, and a living wage. Though temporary workers on campus have MCards, University health services and related health programs are unavailable. Further, many temporary laborers are fired every three months only to be re-hired weeks later, prohibiting them from attaining benefits or full-time status no matter how long they have been employed. Many salaries are permanently capped far below a just wage and quite often whole staffs are terminated to make way for employees who will work for even less. As members of a University community that values human rights and social responsibility, we, the undersigned, urge the Board of Regents to address these issues immediately.
The following petitioners ask the Board of Regents to:
▶ Institute a living wage for all University Employees, temporary and full-time; One fixed and reflective of the cost-of-living for housing, food, and transportation in the Ann Arbor community.
▶ Grant Temporary Workers access to the same Healthcare benefits and access to UHS as enjoyed by full-time workers.
▶ Allow interested Temporary Workers access to full-time work within the University.
▶ Respect the right of UM Employees to form unions on campus.
▶ Allow Union Workers their fundamental right to deny their labor. Remove No-Strike Clauses from Union contracts.Sincerely,
