No to "scaffolding wrap" advertising on The Main

On vous demande, dans vos capacités de maire de Ville Marie et mairesse du Plateau Mont-Royal et maire de Montréal, de réagir pour protéger la site historique du « Main » qui coupe à travers vos arrondissements. Comme vous êtes au courant, ce site est très important pour les Montréalais. Étant la première rue qui est passée au delà des anciennes fortifications du vieux Montréal, le Main est considéré comme une entrée pour l’immigration, un boulevard multiculturel, et un quartier artistique. Pour protéger ce site, le gouvernement fédéral a nommé le Main en 1996 comme une « site nationale historique » et a insisté que des éléments parasites restent à un minimal. Beaucoup de résidents du quartier sont énervés contre un infraction récente: un panneau d’affichage gigantesque couvrant un échafaud situé au coin Sud-est du Main et Sherbrooke. Ce panneau a apparu pour la première fois au printemps.

Pour plusieurs, on dirait que l’échafaudage était mis en place pour rénover et restaurer l’image originale du bâtiment, surtout la couleur des briques (qui sont présentement en blanc). La toile qui recouvre l’échafaudage suggère comment le bâtiment apparaîtrait après les rénovations (sauf pour la publicité). Mais aucune rénovation ne s’est produite auparavant, et peu soudain, une nouvelle publicité a apparu.

Pendant des mois, nous avons toléré cette pollution visuelle, une insulte a notre site historique, et nous avons attendu avec patience la fin des travaux. Ceci ne s’est jamais produit. En effet, une partie du bâtiment s’est effondré. L’échafaudage a été enlevé pour une certaine durée et le mur a été mis enclos. La publicité a réapparue.

On vous demande comme élus publique, d’examiner cette infraction sur la site et de nous informer si des rénovations se passent comme prévu et quand elles vont être achevées, ou bien si ce panneau d’affichage est permanent comme plusieurs à New York.

Nous aimerions voir aussi la création d’une politique qui respecte la nomination historique en empêchant des éléments parasites corporatifs sur le Main, comme ce panneau d’affichage.

We ask you, as the borough mayors of Plateau Mont-Royal and Ville-Marie, we ask you to take action to protect “The Main” National Historic Site, which runs directly through your boroughs. As you are surely aware, The Main holds a special place in the hearts of all Montrealers. As the first street to stretch beyond the ancient fortifications of Old Montréal, The Main is renowned as a gateway of immigration, a multi-cultural boulevard, and the spine of Canada’s most artistic neighbourhoods. To protect this vibrant thoroughfare, in 1996 the federal government designated The Main a “national historic site” and to protect it insisted that “intrusive elements must be minimal". We are upset at the latest violation of our historic site, a gigantic billboard covering scaffolding on the South-East corner of The Main and Sherbrooke. This corporate eyesore first appeared in the late spring.

To many observers it appeared as though the scaffolding was erected in order to renovate and restore the building's original appearance, especially the colour of the bricks (which are currently painted white). The cloth covering the scaffolding suggested what the building would look like after renovation (except for the giant “PERRY ELLIS” ad). However, as the summer passed, no renovations took place, and soon a new billboard appeared, and then another one.

For months we have endured this mental environmental pollution, a flagrant insult to our historic site, and waited patiently for the work to be done. It never happened. Indeed, it appears that a portion of the building on The Main actually collapsed. The scaffold was removed for some time exposing the un-renovated building, and the collapsed wall was fenced in. The billboard has recently re-appeared.

We ask you, as borough mayors, to investigate this violation of the Historic Site and to let us know if actual renovations are indeed underway and when they will be completed, or if this is one of those “permanent” Billboard-scaffolds currently polluting New York City.

We ask you to create a policy for our Historic Site that upholds the spirit of the historic designation by forbidding corporate “intrusive elements” from the Main, such as this "scaffolding wrap" advertising.
