Thurman Munson was an exceptional baseball player with exceptional stats. Since Thurman died on Aug 2, 1979 his legacy has slowly diminished and nearly forgotten about since then. The VET Committee and the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) still have not listed his name and are not in the voting results for the 28 candidates who were eligible for the 2002 election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He's not even mentioned up until 2007.
Below is a list of players eligible for the first time for BBWAA election:
2003: Eddie Murray, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith, Fernando Valenzuela
2004: Joe Carter, Dennis Eckersley, Jimmy Key, Dennis Martinez, Paul Molitor, Tom Pagnozzi, Terry Pendleton, Juan Samuel, Bob Tewksbury
2005: Wade Boggs, Tom Candiotti, Chili Davis, Jeff King, Mark Langston, Willie McGee, Jeff Montgomery, Terry Steinbach
2006: Albert Belle, Will Clark, Gary Gaetti, Orel Hershiser, Darryl Strawberry
2007: Bobby Bonilla, Eric Davis, Tony Gwynn, Stan Javier, Wally Joyner, Mark McGwire, Paul ONeill, Cal Ripken Jr., Bret Saberhagen
Thurman Munson still does not show up as a candidate over some of these players. Not that these players were bad, but Thurman was by far a better all around player. Look at his stats at www.thurmanmunson.com/stats.html. They are unbelievable.
Let's not forget the forgotten Thurman Munson
