Late Night with Tina Fey in 2009 |
To: NBC Studio ExecutivesIn 2009, Conan O’Brien will be leaving NBC’s Late Night to take over as host of The Tonight Show. The person replacing O’Brien will have to be intelligent, funny, able to interact with celebrities, and able to lead a writing staff in writing new material five days a week.
Tina Fey has proven herself. A cast member on Saturday Night Live since 2000, Fey has shown that she can deliver a joke, and in that time she has become a familiar face to millions of viewers. And as SNL’s head writer since 1999, she has proven that she can effectively lead a writing staff who work five days a week, if not more. The success of the 2004 feature film Mean Girls, which Fey both wrote and starred in, further cements her abilities both as a screen presence and as a writer, and the live nature of SNL also displays a certain level of comfort in front of both a camera and a live audience.
Tina Fey is recognizable. She has an established fan following. She is funny. As anchor of SNL’s ‘Weekend Update’ segment, she has shown she can sit behind a desk – perhaps a trivial quality, but an important one for a late night talk show host. And she has appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien numerous times, proving to be a fan favorite guest for the show. The move from studio 8H to studio 6A would be smooth, and it would make sense.Sincerely,
