Boycott Torrid and Hot Topic |
To: Torrid and Hot Topic ExecsTorrid had been a plus size version of Hot Topic. For those not familiar with Hot Topic, they carry raver, punk, and goth clothes. They have pants with metal loops and fabric straps, some done by the company Tripp. The also have many cartoon shirts done by companies such as Doe and Junk Food. The cartoon shirts ranged from what was popular on Cartoon Network to 80's shows like My Little Pony and Care Bears. The also have tons of band shirts, some you couldn't find anywhere else. They also have a large collection of Invader Zim T-shirts. A very hard thing to find. Torrid was a plus size version of this, and it was heaven. Too many times have plus sized girls gone into plus sized stores and found they were expected to wear pastel blouses and plain dress slacks. Many of it looked like things their grandma would wear. Girls who wanted fun fanning out pants with metal hoops and straps were stuck wearing plain plus sized blue jeans. Band shirts at Torrid were in large sizes you couldn't even find at concerts. There wasn't only cartoon shirts, but fun shirts with metal hoops and awesome colors that any Dress Barn or Walmart plus size section would never have.
Torrid was heaven for plus sized girls.
I was so excited when I heard a Torrid was opening right next door to the Hot Topic in my nearby mall! No more driving an hour and a half to the nearest one, it was right in my backyard!
When it opened I was horrified.
The walls of the stores being white was the first thing I noticed. The second thing was all the pastel blouses. The few cartoon shirts they have are on their website, are pastel "Disney's Cutie" ones. There pants section is all dress pants instead of Tripp metal hoops. It was a Dress Barn, or a plus size section of a Target. All the clothing that was once availible to plus size girls was no more. They were expected to dress like their grandmother's once again.

Hot Topic now claims to carry plus sizes, but what used to be a whole store full of fun clothes is now three pages on their website:
