Stop the Killing of Dolphins and Porpoises in the Brazilian Waters!

Dolphins, whales and porpoises are protected in Brazil by federal law (L7643) since 18th December of 1987. Despite this, it is known as a fact that killing of dolphins and porpoises is becoming an increasing clandestine activity in the Brazilian waters.



This crime is supported by a range of economical activities comprising artisanal and commercial fisheries; jewellery and art-craft manufacture using teeth and bones of dolphins and porpoises; use of their flesh as bait in shark fishing; and the cultural belief that the use of organs such as eyes and genitals of these animals as amulets will bring good luck.



As result of the criminal killing of these beautiful and kind creatures, it is believed that some populations are already under serious threat and some species might be at risk of eventual extinction.



Even though Brazilian researchers are working hard to raise the awareness of the public to stop the mortality of small cetaceans from immoral cause, it is fundamental that the entire world is alerted to the fact that thousands of dolphins and porpoises are being illegally killed yearly in the Brazilian waters.



You can help to stop the killing of dolphins and porpoises in Brazil by signing the petition below and passing this on to everyone you know. Our aim is to raise as many signatures as possible from everywhere around the globe. We will send a copy of this appeal to the President of Brazil Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to the Brazilian Senate, to the Ministry of the Environment and to the Chamber of Deputies.

Pare a Matança Indiscriminada de Golfinhos e Botos no Litoral Brasileiro!



Golfinhos, baleias e botos são protegidos pela lei federal brasielira N. 7.643 desde de 18 de dezembro de 1987. Apesar disso, sabe-se que a matança indiscriminada de golfinhos e botos no litoral do Brasil vem se tornando uma atividade clandestina em crescimento.



Este crime está associado a atividades econômicas que compreendem desde a pesca artesanal e comercial, manufatura de bijuterias e artesanatos utilizando dentes e ossos de botos e golfinhos, até uso da carne destes animais como isca na pesca de tubarão e a crença popular de que certos orgãos destes animais como amuleto atraem boa sorte.



Acredita-se que como resultado da matança criminal desses belos e gentis animais, algumas populações de botos e golfinhos já estejam sob perigo e que algumas espécies possam até estar sob risco de extinção.



Embora os pesquisadores brasileiros estejam trabalhando duro para divulgar e aumentar a conscientização do público a cerca da mortalidade de pequenos cetáceos em consequência das atividades ilegais antropogênicas, é fundamental que o mundo inteiro também seja alertado para o fato de que milhares de golfinhos e botos morrem anualmente em águas brasileiras.



Você pode ajudar a parar a matança de golfinhos e botos no Brasil assinando a petição abaixo e passando-a a todas as pessoas que você conhece. Nosso objetivo é levantar o maior número possível de assinaturas de pessoas de todo o globo.
