News Media: Stop Sending Reporters Outside During Hurricanes |
To: News MediaTo the television news media:
We appreciate the splendid up-to-the minute hurricane coverage that you provide to us. Really, we do. This having been said, STOP MAKING SOME POOR REPORTER STAND OUTSIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HURRICANE TO DEMONSTRATE HOW WINDY IT IS!!!!!
Honestly, all of us (except for perhaps the very small children) know that hurricanes are very windy (we'll pass it on to the children for you). It is wholly unnecessary to send some poor guy out there to cling to a tree for dear life and shout, "Well, Mike, it's really windy out here. As you can see, I'm hanging on to a tree for dear life." It's also very awkward when the anchorperson says back, "Thanks for letting us know it's windy, Jake, and for God's sake be careful and don't let go of that tree."
We do appreciate the progress you have made in this area. For instance, albeit recently, we started to see some diversity in terms of who was sent to hang on to a light post for dear life and report that it's windy. As awkward as it is to see anyone at all clinging to a light post and shout that it's windy, it was even more awkward to hear straightfaced white anchormen say: "We go now to our black reporter, who is live on the scene, to tell us whether it's windy or not. Tayshaun, how's the weather?" and then see some poor black guy clinging to the light post shouting "...Steve...windy...drops penetrating exposed skin...crackers...hate you crackers!" Yet, though you have come so far, we think we have now reached the place where it is no longer necessary to subject anyone at all to it. Your past efforts have successfully educated the public on the complicated subject of how hurricanes are windy and how it is unpleasant to be outside during one. Having taught us this, it is no longer necessary to continue teaching us.Sincerely,
