As students of the University of Central Florida, members of the art community, and other interested parties, we are troubled by the lack of a silkscreen instructor for Fall 2008. We believe the university should consider the following criteria for the new hire:
In order to be the high level, well-respected division one school Ucf desires to be, it should support and grow the art department. The new hire for Fall 2008 Printmaking should be knowledgeable in all varieties of printmaking. The department's Advanced Printmaking already has etching and woodcut instructors, however silkscreen and lithography have diminished over time. If the new position does not continue silkscreen, within a year no new students will know the process. Thus the state of the art equipment will go unused as well as the facilities.
Silkscreen is one of the highest demanded courses. It is desired by those within the studio arts as well as graphic design, photography, animation, and others even outside the visual arts department.
Furthermore, it is non-toxic and the most environmentally sound process.
It is essential to resolve this issue for the sake of our progressive art and university community.
