Dear Senator Voinovich,

The United States Department of Energy plans to spend $300 million on down blending and destroying a 500kg stockpile of uranium-233 at Oak Ridge National Laboratories by year 2012.

Uranium-233 is a man made substance that cannot be replaced since the infrastructure required to produce it no longer exists. According to DOE/IG-0795, uranium-233 is a valuable substance filled with isotopes that can treat up to 6,000 cancer patients per year and is an essential catalyst for using thorium in a molten salt nuclear reactor. Simply maintaining the stockpile is estimated to cost merely $60,000 per year.

We, the undersigned, request you and other senators order the Department of Energy to save the uranium-233 stockpile from destruction.
