Support Carbon Offsets for Organics Recycling in Climate Change Bill |
To: U.S. SenateOn September 30, Senators Kerry and Boxer introduced the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act, S. 1733. As the Senate considers S. 1733, we, the undersigned, urge you to support this bill and to include provisions specifically listing composting and anaerobic digestion as eligible carbon offset projects.
As members and friends of the United States Composting Council (USCC), we support strong environmental and energy policy, and thank Senators Kerry and Boxer for the effort they have made with this bill. The USCC believes that a federal program of carbon offsets for composting projects and anaerobic digestion projects would spur needed investment in our industry, while effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Section 733 of the Kerry-Boxer bill lists a variety of projects that the Obama Administration will consider to be eligible for a carbon offsets program. Senator Stabenow has released a discussion draft that includes composting and anaerobic digestion projects as eligible offset projects, and we ask you to support her efforts to include this language in the final bill.
Organics recycling companies in all 50 states help farms, municipalities and other producers of organic waste divert more than 21 million tons of material from landfills. By including the provisions that we support, we can create even more jobs, work toward greater energy independence, and contribute to protecting our environment. We urge you to include Sen. Stabenow's language in the final bill.
Sincerely,
