No Death Penalty in Vermont |
To: Vermont Governor James Douglas and Members of the Vermont State LegislaturePETITION TO RE-AFFIRM THE ABOLITION OF THE DEATH PENALTY IN VERMONT
Whereas:
The last person executed by the state of Vermont was in 1954.
The last death sentence imposed by a Vermont court was in 1957. Six months later the sentence was commuted.
In 1965 the Vermont State Legislature effectively outlawed capital punishment, with full statutory abolition in1987.
Currently, the US Attorney’s Office is prosecuting a death penalty case in Vermont and
Whereas:
The death penalty is the ultimate violation of human rights. It diminishes each of us and should never be used by any government.
Therefore:
We, the undersigned residents of the State of Vermont, are proud that our state has abolished the death penalty and we re-affirm this ban, calling for it to be observed in all cases, both state and federal.Sincerely,
