It is a matter of shame for all members of our global community in which human rights are said to be paramount, that not only the Tibetan people, but their culture too is being killed. It is shocking to hear that although English is a requirement for most university courses, Tibetan school children cannot learn English unless they forfeit study of their mother tongue.
We would like to bring to your attention the fact that torture is still regularly used against political detainees. Such prisoners are held in sub-standard conditions, given insufficient food, forbidden to speak, frequently held incommunicado and denied proper medical treatment. Such treatment of human beings is the antithesis of those values which should be upheld globally:
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1949
Acts of cruelty against members of the human family cannot, and should not be ignored. All of us, as members of a global community have a responsibility to all members of the human race.
Thus, to encourage the protection of humanity, we ask you to take considered and effective action to monitor the actions of the PRC concerning the treatment of the Tibetan people.
We ask this of you, as we believe that all humans have the right to the same freedoms we enjoy.
