A Declaration of Emotional Vulnerability |
To: All those who are not yet enlightenedWe who have signed this declaration do hereby admit the truth of our emotional vulnerability before the world and we encourage others to do the same.
We acknowledge that we have an emotional need for approval that is so demanding, it causes us to feel great pain whenever it is dissatisfied. Our “feelings” can be easily hurt.
We know that every human being experiences this same need with exactly the same intensity. No matter how confident or indifferent some may appear to be, we know that The Need exists within them, making them just as profoundly vulnerable as the most painfully shy person who ever lived.
We understand that people tend not to notice the emotional vulnerability of others when they see confident smiles or angry faces. We also understand that when people look at others and do not see vulnerability, they tend to see a threat, instead.
When people do see the emotional vulnerability of others, while also sensing that their own vulnerability is well hidden, they are encouraged by their instincts to emotionally victimize others.
Recognizing these truths has led us to the realization that we must do everything within our power to make the emotional vulnerability of every human being clearly apparent to all others at all times.
We know that if an individual sees that his vulnerability has been exposed to all others, his instincts will no longer encourage him to hurt anyone. A feeling of kinship with others will arise, instead.
We understand just how profoundly important it is for us to always reassure others that we have the same deep need for approval that they have.
WE DON’T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO MISTAKENLY THINK THAT WE MIGHT BE LESS VULNERABLE THAN THEY ARE
We do therefore dedicate ourselves to the cause of Emotional Honesty, an all-out effort to bring an end to the Myth of Emotional Invulnerability. Our goal is to persuade every human being on the planet to confess his/her vulnerability to the world.
We may all be different from each other in our talents, our experiences, and our knowledge of various things, but there is one way in which we are all exactly alike. We all have the same emotional needs.
In an emotionally honest world, people will want to constantly celebrate their shared emotional “weakness” because they will understand that it is actually a profound strength and the key to their collective happiness and security. They will be quite happy to admit it with confidence and pride.
ALL WE NEED TO DO is make sure that everyone’s attention is constantly focused on the reality of our shared emotional vulnerability. No one must be allowed to “forget.”
As we boldly declare our emotional vulnerability to the world, we call upon all others to join us in a True Friendship of Souls…
Sincerely,
