Whereas the Eastern Wolf is recognised as a Species at Risk in Canada;
Whereas Algonquin Park is the largest protected area in its range and the world for this species;
Whereas human trapping and shooting of the wolves outside the park have been associated with a decline in the population inside the park, weakening the population structure and increasing its susceptibility to increased hybridisation with coyotes;
Whereas these threats will persist beyond the arbitrary 30-month termination of the hunting ban;
Whereas the exclusion of coyotes allegedly makes the ban unenforceable; and
Whereas these wolves are of significance not only to Canadians but to naturalists and tourists to Canada worldwide;
We therefore call upon the Government of Ontario to:
- make the ban permanent
- include coyotes in the ban
- develop a province-wide wolf conservation strategy
